Fellas Play of the Day: Pirates (-122) Should Use Pitching Matchup To Their Advantage

imageThe ailing Pirates come into their weekend series having lost 13 of their last 15 games. Injury has destroyed them and has made it hard to back them recently. Tonight’s situation however screams bounce back. As money line favorites of only (-122), we see value in the Bucs as favorites have gone 21-8 in their last 29 against each other.

Nick Tepesch is a 27-year old who was released by the Rangers just last week. He has a career 4.5 ERA and this year posted a 4.11 with a 4.3 FIP in AAA. The Rangers weakness is pitching and they saw no use in him.

The Pirates on the other hand bring in their stud prospect Jameson Taillon. Taillon was drafted between Bryce Harper and Manny Machado and after battling Tommy John is finally emerging in the MLB. For the Pirates poor staff he may be their best pitcher already. He is clearly better than Tepesch, and was much more dominant in AAA this year.

To see the Pirates as only slight favorites goes back to their recent struggles. Still, it shows value for the Bucs, and in the perfect pitching matchup makes them worth the play today.
